Other Gods?

"God said do not worship any other gods, stay away from people who have powers to see the future,etc..Why is that? Are there other gods out there?"

You shall have no other gods before me.
(Exodus 20:3 ESV)

I am the LORD, and there is no other,
besides me there is no God;
(Isaiah 45:5a ESV)

These two verses seem to contradict themselves. First, God commands us to have no other gods. Then he says there aren't any other gods. What does he mean?

There is only one God. Scripture testifies to this fact repeatedly. He is the creator of everything.(Gen 1:1) He has absolute power and authority over all. God, is God alone.

So what about these other gods? Though there are no other real gods, we create false gods all the time. To whom, or what, do you yield absolute authority to? What holds so much power and influence over you, that you will not go against its desires? For some money is their god. Their lust for money allow it to set on the throne ruling everything in their lives.

By far, the most worshiped god is ourselves. We bow the knee to nothing and no one. We are our own ultimate authority. We sit upon the throne judging right and wrong. We declare ourselves god. We may not express it in words, but our actions show it.

Our loyalty, worship, and obedience is to be reserved for God alone.

What's so bad about fortune tellers? When we turn to psychics for guidance and direction, who are we neglecting? God, obviously. We are to look to God for guidance. It is to him that we are to direct our prayers. When we have access to the Knower of all things, why would we look anywhere else?

I've intentionally kept this brief, not wanting to drone on excessively if the point has been made. (I've been known to :-) If there is anything that I failed to answer, or another point you'd like me to explore, please feel free to let me know.
