Are You Hated?

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: Prov 6:16
I can remember when I first read this verse. I thought wow, these will be worst, most vile, disgustingly horrible, sins that anyone could ever imagine. You know, the kind of stuff that keeps Montel and Jerry Springer on the air.

But they weren’t what I had imagined. Proverbs 6:17-19
  1. haughty eyes,
  2. a lying tongue,
  3. and hands that shed innocent blood,
  4. a heart that devises wicked plans,
  5. feet that make haste to run to evil,
  6. a false witness who breathes out lies,
  7. and one who sows discord among brothers.
Some of them seemed to fit the bill, like shedding innocent blood, but haughty eyes? How’d that make the list?

That’s when it hit me - God hates the things that I don’t even consider to be all that bad. Sure murder is on my list as well, but lying, slander, and plain old trouble making shouldn’t invoke his hatred - should it?

This just trashes all of our self-righteousness. We fool ourselves into thinking that if we don’t commit the “BIG” sins, then we must be all right. God should be giving us the ole ‘that a boy. A pat on the back for a job well done.

But what if he looks at our thoughts and not just our actions? Ouch!

Look what had to say about the haughty eyes. Haughty - disdainfully proud; snobbish; scornfully arrogant. Do you have a snobbish, arrogant, prideful attitude? This falls on the Lords hate list.

A false witness who breathes out lies. Are you always truthful when you speak about another person? God hates the slanderous gossip.

Here’s one that thrives in the workplace. We all know (are?) that guy who loves to stir the pot, always instigating ill will and enmity between others. Well this also is abominable in the eyes of God. Yes, I said abominable!

What’s the lesson here? God takes our sins much more seriously than we do. Whether you are a murderer, a liar, or just an arrogant self-righteous jerk, know that God doesn’t see you as the mere victim of character flaws, he declares your ways as sinful, objects of his hatred.

These six things the Lord hates. Go ahead and take another look at that list.

And remember -
but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16
